Current Mood: amused
We're leaving early tomorrow for Windycon. In the meantime, here are my children:

The best part is that Alex keeps watching this over and over again, and it makes her laugh like a loon. Hm.

Look, three pages! They are in the dark and we don't really know what's going on!

So Liz Baillie, minicomics superstar, has just started publishing Freewheel online! I've read the first couple chapters as minicomics, so I can in fact guarantee you that this is a very interesting story and you ought to read it. It gets a bit strange!

Ok one more thing, a little bit of a project I'm working on. I hope to have more of it to show you all sooooon. Byebyebyebye.

<3 Oh, dear. I was running around with my cordless drill tearing up my kitchen and banging together a reasonably sturdy makeshift counter so my Mom has something to make sandwiches on while we're gone, and completely forgot what day it is. (All right, it's a long story. Just accept that I was distracted.) So, yes, Phil and I will be at Windycon this weekend. I am really looking forward to it. Also, We now have SQUEEZY CASTLE WULFENBACH AIRSHIPS in stock!

Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 04:56 pm 3 Pages: Book 2 is OVER!

So, Chapter 10 and Book 2 of OoT both end with this update; this comic is in theory two-thirds done, now. Goodness goodness goodness.

The handsome Rice Boy Wiki went up recently! A couple of folks have already laid down an infrastructure and started putting a bunch of information there. I think I'll replace the World page with a link straight to this wiki. The goal is to have a focal point for world-internal information that I don't have to spend a lot of time maintaining myself. So if this is an interesting thing, feel free to have a look and modify stuff.

Right now I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert for the first time (for a lovely reading group), and LOVING IT. I tried it a couple of times years ago, but never got through the dense bits near the start. It is a very visual book, I think, so I've drawn two illustrations and hope to do more from later in the book. OK! Will talk to you on Wednesday!

Nov. 5th, 2009 @ 08:32 pm Please date food
At the Dojo, somebody left a note on the fridge:

"Please date food."

Somebody crossed out date and wrote "marry."

Later, somebody crossed out marry and wrote, "cheat on."

Somebody else wrote along the side "+1 for marrying food."

Nov. 4th, 2009 @ 10:27 pm 3 Pages: We have to leave now.

Oh goodness me all this turmoil! Is T-O-E finished being an uncompromising, ridiculous badass? Spoiler: I don't think so.

I found an INCREDIBLE CARTOON from 1983 about some green creatures and SKYWHALES. Watch it and admit that you are completely awed by it! Even though it's a brief, very dated film, I've rarely seen such thorough and elegant world-building. I still hold out hope that this Avatar movie, with all of its modernity and ground-breaking effects or whatever, will have a similarly well-designed, foreign world, but I DUNNO. I am looking forward to seeing that thing though, which is apparently an unpopular opinion in the community of genre fiction nerds. ANYWAY.

Also on the Youtubes I put up a video of me drawing a page at 2000% realtime which I think is cool. It's a bit of the video I'm putting together for my kickstarter project to fund getting Order of Tales printed. That will probably be going online on Monday or so! See you people.

Nov. 4th, 2009 @ 03:32 am On God and Love.
Current Mood: sad
It's 4am here and I can't sleep. I have a knot in my stomach and a sick feeling in my heart over the news that voters in Maine passed Question 1 on the ballot, which repealed a law to allow same-sex couples to marry, albeit narrowly.

I want to scream my frustration and sadness over this. I want to rage against this latest (narrow) victory for intolerance, hate and ignorance.

Instead, all I feel inspired to do right now is share a personal story with anyone who cares to read it.

It's about the day I found God.

I was seventeen and had the opportunity to go on a short tour of Europe with a music group to play in various countries. We stopped in Paris where I had the pleasure to go to one of the largest, most majestic Catholic cathedrals I've ever seen. The name of the church eludes me after all these years, but I was eager to attend a mass because I was feeling spiritually confused. I was born and raised a Catholic but I was beginning to doubt the teachings of the church. "Rebellious" alternatives, like declaring myself agnostic or atheist, didn't seem to fit either. I even took a glance at the Church of Satan, but that's a story for another day.

In the end I attended this mass in France, but truth be told I wasn't really there. I was in my own head, knelt in prayer as I took in the pious majesty of my surroundings. I found myself doing something very cliche... looking up with my hands folded and asking for answers, albeit in my own head.

I said to myself, "I want to pray, but I don't know who to pray to any more. I want to believe in something, but I don't know what to believe in. The only thing I believe in is love."

And just like that, the answer came to me.
"God is love."

My heart swelled with joy. To this day I can't describe the happiness and relief I felt with this revelation. This was something I could grasp. This was something I could believe in. This was something I had been taught in my childhood and could easily take it with me all through the years. God, my God, is Love. Screw all the other teachings from all the other sources. God is Love is my religion, and I live that to this day.

I earnestly believe in God, though I don't refer to God as Him or Her. I can get behind a being who is full of unconditional love and compassion. I can easily worship a deity who loves all its creations equally. I can stand firmly behind the feeling in my heart that I received that day in the church because I feel it still in the presence of my family, my dearest friends, my beloved girlfriend and even from the readers of my webcomic who come and say such wonderful things to me, a total stranger, when I'm out at conventions. That is Love... unconditional and all-encompassing Love, and that is my God.

It saddens me greatly that not everyone sees God that way. It breaks my heart to see people standing up for hate and intolerance in God's name, claiming that God's love is not unconditional and all-encompassing. To deny others the right to express their love for one another in all its glory and uplifting wonder is, to me, a sin against the joy that God gave us.

I guess I'll just have to pray that some of that glorious Love will spread sooner than later, and all this needless hate will be nothing more than a regrettable memory one day.

Steamcon was absolutely fantastic, and I'm thrilled to hear they're planning to do it again next year. I've got the first day we can apply for dealer's space marked on my calendar. The art guests were Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, whose long-awaited book Boilerplate is finally out. As soon as I can pry it away from Phil, I look forward to reading it. He keeps going on about how amazing it is. I can't wait to find out for myself!

Halloween was madness. Experiment #1 wanted to be Death. But not just ANY death, he wanted to be Death from the Discworld. So I made a little Death of Rats to go along with him. Unfortunately, the Death of Rats isn't quite finished, because while I was working on him, three pallets of books arrived unexpectedly in our driveway, and no help was nigh. (We expected them early this week, and they really ARE supposed to call first...) So Phil and I moved the whole mess ourselves. Fortunately, the rain had stopped, and it was a gorgeous, cool autumn day. The wonderful truck driver actually backed into our driveway and helped us drop the pallets right where we needed them, so at least we didn't have the usual "fun" of carrying the books up the driveway. So, yes, the new reprints are in. Now to get volumes one, two and three reprinted, and nine in print. Gah. It never ends!

Anyway, the Death of Rats was finished enough to thrill the kid and be adorable for trick-or-treating, but I want to finish him properly before I post pictures.

Experiment #2 was a pirate queen, because she's ALWAYS a pirate queen. So her outfit only needed minor repairs and tweaks. Whew. This year, I got her a little Folkmanis parrot puppet. So cute!

<3 --Phil drew a couple of great comic strip style ads (yes, for money)... one using Girl Genius characters, and one using Buck Godot. You should look at them, they're awesome. And I didn't help write them, so I can say that. Oh, well, actually, I did the final scripting, but that's pretty minor. Ha. Well, look or don't. like them!--Kaja <3

Nov. 1st, 2009 @ 07:46 pm 3 Pages: Traitor!

Three new pages! I will not say anything about them! Five pages left of Book 2, now.

I will say that the Mars Minicomic I finished recently is in the store now! It is a weird little thing with a whole lot of dense crosshatching, and matches a piece of classical music. I eventually want to make little comics to match other parts of the Planets Suite by Mister Holst but that will probably take a while, I don't know.

To answer a question I've been getting a lot lately: It's totally okay if you use these comics for icons and signatures and stuff! Seriously! As long as you're not claiming you drew it or something, you don't even have to credit me. It's okay!

So, um, here's the next part of the P4 comic. Just as a warning, this comic continues to have indirect spoilers in it!
